Twenty-six herbs are part of the recipe, which is carefully hand-distilled into absinthe at the Eichelberger distillery. This gives the absinthe a very complex aroma. The various herbs blend together to create a harmonious whole. Anyone with experience in discerning different herbs in absinthes will find this one a true delight. As with all Eichelberger absinthes, this Verte shines with a dense, milky louche and a wonderful fragrance.

The Eichelberg tradition

A great-great-grandfather of the family, Eduard Heinrich Nötzel, lived in Danzig from 1800 to 1874. He took over his father's wholesale timber business and with it the Nötzel family coat of arms. An old advertisement in the "Latest Guide for Strangers and Locals" shows that he significantly expanded the business and, in addition to various spirits and liqueurs, also produced his own "Extracte d'Absinthe." He offered his specialties for tasting at his inn, "Zum Elefanten" (The Elephant).

In our photo gallery, you can see an old label showing the elephant above the "Nötzel" name. Eduard Heinrich Nötzel's son, Otto Louis Nötzel, continued the flourishing business. Unfortunately, he died young, and his son was still too young to take over the company. Therefore, the business ceased operations around 1900, and its activities were almost forgotten amidst the turmoil of the two World Wars and the abandonment of the family estate in Danzig.

Almost, because since 1997 the Wild family has been experiencing a renaissance in the production of spirits and absinthe. With great attention to detail, they primarily use fruit from the family's own orchards and herbs from their herb garden to create fine brandies. The Verte 78 label is a tribute to the original label of their ancestor, EH Nötzel.
