Absinthe Ritual: 5 ways to drink Absinthe correctly

There are various rituals for enjoying absinthe. Below, you can watch videos of different absinthe rituals. For beginners, we recommend preparing your absinthe according to the traditional French ritual. A special experience for advanced absintheurs is enjoying absinthe with an absinthe fountain. We will also show you why you should avoid the Czech absinthe ritual, where the sugar cube is lit.

Classic French Absinthe Ritual

When using the classic French absinthe ritual, you first fill the absinthe glass with 20 ml of absinthe and then place one or two sugar cubes on the absinthe spoon. Then, cold water from an absinthe carafe is poured over the sugar. The absinthe now begins to cloud, the "louche" sets in. The absinthe is ready when the absinthe and water have completely mixed.

Czech Fire Absinthe Ritual

In the now widespread Czech fire ritual, 1-2 sugar cubes are placed on an absinthe spoon and absinthe is poured over them. The sugar is ignited, causing it to caramelize and drip through the perforations in the absinthe spoon into the glass. Once the sugar is completely caramelized, the glass is filled with water. However, this fire ritual is less common among connoisseurs, as the caramel taste of the sugar distorts the delicate absinthe flavor, the alcohol burns off, and the preparation can also end in a fiery disaster...

Fountains Absinthe Ritual

In the Belle Epoque era, absinthe fountains were used in French bistros to prepare absinthe. For the fountain ritual, the glass container is first filled with ice cubes and water. Then, the chilled water is drawn from the taps. However, only a fine stream emerges, often just a steady drip. This dissolves the sugar cube on the absinthe spoon and slowly fills the absinthe glass. Because the water mixes very slowly with the absinthe, a particularly intense louche is created in the glass. Clearly, preparing absinthe with an absinthe fountain is the ultimate absinthe ritual!

Brouille Absinthe Ritual

An absinthe brouille is a glass attachment placed on top of an absinthe glass. The attachment has a small hole in the middle, through which chilled iced water flows into the absinthe in a fine stream. This creates a particularly beautiful louche. Because the brouille ritual is very easy to perform, it is becoming increasingly popular among absintheurs.

Brouilleur "Auto Verseurs" Absinth Ritual

As an alternative to an absinthe fountain, an absinthe brouilleur can also be used to drink absinthe. With the "Auto Verseur" brouilleur, the container is filled with cold water, which then audibly flows into the absinthe via a seesaw with a "tick-tock" sound.

Bouilleur "Two Level" Absinthe Ritual

The "Two Level" Brouilleur is another variant where the water flows from the container, over a second level equipped with sugar, into the absinthe.

Brouilleur "Streamline" Absinthe Ritual

The Streamline Brouilleur is used for the "Inside Out" preparation of absinthe. First, water is poured into the absinthe glass, then the Brouilleur is placed on top and the cup is filled with absinthe. Through the "injection needle", the absinthe shoots into the glass, creating a beautiful, swirling louche.

Pipes Absinthe Ritual

With this absinthe pipe, you can enjoy the Green Fairy in a whole new way: First, pour absinthe into the pipe. Next, add a sugar cube and ice cubes into the pipe chambers. Then, fill the pipe with cold water. Now, the magical effect begins: The green absinthe rises in white streaks into the upper chambers of the pipe. After this spectacle, you just need to blow briefly through the straw to finally mix the absinthe with the water. This step should not be forgotten, otherwise, you'll be drawing pure absinthe through the straw. Have fun with this fascinating ritual!
