Absinthe Republique is a French Absinthe based on a traditional 19th century recipe and made with French wormwood and a superior wine alcohol base (instead of neutral grain spirit). Coriander seeds add some nutty, slightly fresh notes, perfectly matching the aromas of wormwood, fennel and anise. The wine alcohol base gives Absinthe République a faint touch of brandy in the finish.

The historical and contemporary Absinthe culture is deeply rooted in the French Republic. Being created in the year 1792, Absinthe popularity grew steadily throughout the 19th century, especially in the French metropolitan areas. Reminisce of the golden era, Absinthe République is produced in France at the Paul Devoille Absinthe distillery. Mr. Paul Devoille founded the distillery in 1859 and now, 150 years later, Absinthe République is distilled at this heritage site. If you check out the other product pictures in our photo gallery, you can see a vintage photography of Mr. Paul Devoille, proudly standing in front of his mansion.

Recipe and tasting notes of Absinthe République

The recipe of Absinthe République is based on a traditional herbal composition. It includes green anise, fennel and of course wormwood. But Absinthe République uses as well a special ingredient, that gives this Absinthe a unique taste: Coriander seeds. The seeds of coriander taste completely different in comparison to fresh coriander leaves. You will experience a nutty, slightly fresh note, perfectly matching the aromas of fennel and anise. For the distillation, wine alcohol is used as a base (instead of neutral grain spirit). This superior distillation method gives Absinthe République a faint touch of Cognac in the finish with smooth and creamy notes.

The label is inspired by Absinthe Premier Fils, a historical Absinthe brand from Romans, France. This Absinthe indicated its natural coloration with a French flag banner at the bottom of the label (see our photo gallery). Absinthe République's label was inspired by this historical original, you find the French banner on the label as well, promoting the natural coloration. Overall, if you are looking for a premium Absinthe and appreciate the combination of tradition with a hint of extravagance, then Absinthe République should be your choice!

République was conceived as an extraordinary, yet traditional Absinthe based on the French model. The focus is on exclusivity and reconstruction, an Absinthe as it was drunk in the 19th century as a matter of something special.

The Absinthe is based on the classic French Verte style: clear wormwood structure, dry herbal aromas and a playful addition of coriander seeds.

République avoids extreme bitterness or overpowering aromatics, but makes use of coriander seeds as an herbal ingredient. This gives this Absinthe a slighty spicyness.

République is a classic Verte Absinthe, based on traditional French everyday Absinthes – yet experimental because of coriander seeds in the recipe.

République is particularly suitable for regular classic absinthe enjoyment, for evenings without ceremony, or as a reliable absinthe for lovers of traditional styles.

Frequently Asked Questions General

Absinthe is a traditional herbal spirit whose characteristic taste is primarily derived from wormwood, anise, and fennel. It originated in the border region between Switzerland and France and became widely known in the 19th century.

Absinthe is traditionally diluted with ice-cold water, which is slowly dripped into the glass – often over a sugar cube. This preparation allows the aromas to unfold and creates the typical "louche" effect, where the spirit becomes milky and cloudy.

The high alcohol content serves as a carrier for the subtle herbal aromas and preserves them. Absinthe is therefore not intended for pure consumption, but is traditionally drunk diluted with water.

Absinthe is a traditional herbal spirit, whose characteristic taste is mainly due to wormwood, anise, and fennel. It originated in the border region between Switzerland and France and gained widespread recognition in the 19th century.

For the classic preparation, an Absinthe glass, an Absinthe spoon for the sugar cube, and a carafe or fountain with ice-cold water are used. These tools allow for slow dilution and ensure a balanced taste experience.
