The Absinthe glass "Pontarlier" is the epitome of an original Absinthe glass. It is world renowned after being featured in a painting made by Charles Maire for the most popular Absinthe of the 19th century, Pernod Fils. You can see the original painting in our photo gallery. The Pontarlier glass is mouthblown and has a reservoir in the stem to measure the correct amount of Absinthe. Like former originals it is nicely cut, to give it a premium and nostalgic look. If you are looking for an original Absinthe glass, that makes no compromises in terms of quality, the Pontarlier glass is the definite winner.

Variations of the Pontarlier Absinthe glass

We also offer a second, similar Pontarlier glass for sale in our store: The regular Pontarlier Glass is not handmade, it is made of pressed glass. Therefore, it is very durable but has a manufacturing seam at the walls. These Pontarlier glasses are also a bit taller than the handmade Pontarlier reservoir version. It is up to you which glass you prefer. But the Pontarlier reservoir is definitely our favorite glass. We love that these glasses are cut. It really makes them stand out, and it spreads the allure of the 19th century. If you are looking for nostalgia (like us), this mouth-blown Pontarlier glass will be the definite winner; we can highly recommend it.

Pontarlier Absinthe glasses and the painting by Charles Maire

Pontarlier glasses are named after the French town Pontarlier. Pontarlier was the Absinthe hub in the 19th century, many distilleries were located in this small town close to the Swiss border. The biggest player, Pernod Absinthe, had, as well, a large factory in Pontarlier. For advertisement purposes, Charles Maire from Pontarlier (1845-1919) painted a still life showing a bottle of Pernod, two Absinthe glasses, a water carafe, and a newspaper from Pontarlier. This is how the glasses got their name. Pernod mass-produced this artwork, and soon the paintings decorated almost every French bistro. If you are lucky, you can still find a copy of Charles Maire's famous still life at a flea market in France.

Frequently Asked Questions about the
Product

A Pontarlier reservoir glass is a classic absinthe glass specifically designed for traditional preparation. The integrated reservoir indicates how much absinthe is poured before water is added.

The reservoir helps to precisely measure the correct amount of absinthe. It ensures a balanced mixing ratio between absinthe and water.

"Handmade" means that the glass is manufactured by hand. This makes each glass unique, with small, characteristic variations that underscore the handcrafted quality.

The Pontarlier glass originates from Pontarlier, the French absinthe capital, where this glass shape was widespread in the 19th century. It remains an iconic absinthe glass to this day.

This glass is ideal for absinthe lovers and connoisseurs who value authentic preparation and want to enjoy absinthe in the classic way – both for private enjoyment and as a stylish collector's item.

Frequently Asked Questions
general

For the traditional ritual, three basics are usually sufficient: an Absinthe glass, an Absinthe spoon, and ice-cold water (e.g., from a carafe). Sugar cubes are optional. Those who prepare Absinthe more frequently or serve multiple people often use a fountain or a brouilleur for particularly even dripping.

An Absinthe glass is shaped to better highlight the aroma and mixing ratio. Many classic models (e.g., Pontarlier glasses) support the typical dilution with water and ensure that the louche effect develops beautifully and controllably – something that often appears less "harmonious" in a simple tumbler.

The Absinthe spoon is placed over the glass to hold a sugar cube while water slowly drips over it. "The right one" primarily depends on the glass size and style: It is important that it rests steadily and offers enough surface area for the water to flow through evenly.

Carafe: simple, flexible, ideal for beginners Brouilleur: controlled drip directly onto the glass, very classic Fountain: perfect for quiet, even dripping and when several glasses are to be prepared one after another (or simultaneously) – often the "ritual upgrade."

For glasses: clean gently, especially with delicate shapes or decorations – ideally with mild dish soap and a soft cloth. Spoons (depending on material/finish) should be stored dry to maintain their surface and shine. For delicate or coated items, hand washing is usually the safest option.
