The traditional Absinthe ritual with sugar cubes

In our video, you can see how you prepare Absinthe the traditional French way. You need an Absinthe glass, an Absinthe spoon, sugar cubes and ice-cold water for this ritual. This is how it works: You place the Absinthe spoon on the rim of the glass, put a sugar cube on top and slowly add water. The Absinthe in the glass blends with water and magically louches from green to an opalescent white color. Santé, your sugared Absinthe is prepared!

Frequently Asked Questions about the
Product

Sugar cubes are used to selectively reduce bitterness, especially in absinthes with pronounced wormwood or herbal notes. They are not an essential ingredient, but rather an optional means of fine-tuning the flavor.

Sugar cubes dissolve more slowly and in a more controlled manner. This allows the sweetness to be gradually integrated into the absinthe without disrupting the louche development or the flow of water.

The sugar itself does not directly alter the louche. However, the slower addition of water via the sugar creates a calmer emulsion, which promotes a more uniform turbidity.

The sugar cube is placed on an absinthe spoon and slowly moistened with water. As it dissolves, the sweetness is distributed evenly into the glass without abruptly mixing the absinthe.

Sugar cubes are particularly suitable for classic, strong absinthe styles. For mild or uncolored, clear absinthes (Blanches and La Bleues), sugar can be omitted entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions
general

For the traditional ritual, three basics are usually sufficient: an Absinthe glass, an Absinthe spoon, and ice-cold water (e.g., from a carafe). Sugar cubes are optional. Those who prepare Absinthe more frequently or serve multiple people often use a fountain or a brouilleur for particularly even dripping.

An Absinthe glass is shaped to better highlight the aroma and mixing ratio. Many classic models (e.g., Pontarlier glasses) support the typical dilution with water and ensure that the louche effect develops beautifully and controllably – something that often appears less "harmonious" in a simple tumbler.

The Absinthe spoon is placed over the glass to hold a sugar cube while water slowly drips over it. "The right one" primarily depends on the glass size and style: It is important that it rests steadily and offers enough surface area for the water to flow through evenly.

Carafe: simple, flexible, ideal for beginners Brouilleur: controlled drip directly onto the glass, very classic Fountain: perfect for quiet, even dripping and when several glasses are to be prepared one after another (or simultaneously) – often the "ritual upgrade."

For glasses: clean gently, especially with delicate shapes or decorations – ideally with mild dish soap and a soft cloth. Spoons (depending on material/finish) should be stored dry to maintain their surface and shine. For delicate or coated items, hand washing is usually the safest option.
