Absinthe Lord of the Frogs (German: Herr der Frösche) is a deep green Absinthe of the SaarWhisky distillery. It is based on an original recipe from 1870 from the Val de Travers, the country of origin of Absinthe. It was carefully macerated by hand and then distilled. After distillation, a second maceration process with a high number of different herbs produces the very dense green color and flavor intensity. Lord of the Frogs is accordingly not a gentle Absinthe, but has a very complex aroma density. Anise, fennel and wormwood notes characterize the taste, the long finish reveals fruity notes of raisins and dark chocolate.

The SaarWhisky Distillery

The "Saarland" is a region in the southwest of Germany. It is shaped by heavy mining and crowned with multifaceted natural landscapes. This region is as well home of the SaarWhisky distillery. Since 2015 SaarWhisky is specialized in so-called "Single Cask Bottlings". These are whiskey bottlings from only one single cask, which are offered in small batches. These have the same alcohol strength in the bottle as it was originally in the whiskey barrel (cask strength) and come without the addition of colorants or cooling filtration. For this SaarWhisky imports barrels from Scotland and Ireland, which they personally select from hundreds. In the last years they have expanded their selection as well to exceptional Absinthe, Pastis and Gin which they distill in small batches with eccentric bottle designs.

Lord of the Frogs is a deep green absinthe from Germany, produced by the SaarWhisky distillery. It is based on an original recipe from 1870 from the Val-de-Travers, the historical region of origin of absinthe.

The absinthe is macerated by hand, then distilled and in the second step macerated again with a large number of different herbs, which gives it both intense color and complex aroma.

The taste is very intense and complex: classic anise, fennel and wormwood notes dominate, while fruity notes such as raisins and dark chocolate appear in the long finish.

Due to the dense herbal maceration and high aroma concentration, this absinthe is deliberately strong and complex – it is aimed less at beginners, but rather at connoisseurs with a preference for intense absinthes.

The deep green color comes exclusively from natural herbs, not artificial dyes. This intense color is a result of the second maceration and the variety of herbs used.

Frequently Asked Questions General

Absinthe is a traditional herbal spirit whose characteristic taste is primarily derived from wormwood, anise, and fennel. It originated in the border region between Switzerland and France and became widely known in the 19th century.

Absinthe is traditionally diluted with ice-cold water, which is slowly dripped into the glass – often over a sugar cube. This preparation allows the aromas to unfold and creates the typical "louche" effect, where the spirit becomes milky and cloudy.

The high alcohol content serves as a carrier for the subtle herbal aromas and preserves them. Absinthe is therefore not intended for pure consumption, but is traditionally drunk diluted with water.

Absinthe is a traditional herbal spirit, whose characteristic taste is mainly due to wormwood, anise, and fennel. It originated in the border region between Switzerland and France and gained widespread recognition in the 19th century.

For the classic preparation, an Absinthe glass, an Absinthe spoon for the sugar cube, and a carafe or fountain with ice-cold water are used. These tools allow for slow dilution and ensure a balanced taste experience.
