Absinthe Purple Haze is a red Absinthe from the German SaarWhisky Distillery. It is composed of traditional herbs used to make Absinthe. After distillation a further maceration is done to give this Absinthe its natural red color. The distillers use hibiscus flowers for that. But the special thing about Purple Haze is its louche. When water is added the Absinthe clouds into a very beautiful milky purple color. It is simply magical! The taste of Purple Haze is slightly sweet with floral notes of hibiscus.

NOTE: As this Absinthe is naturally colored, the red color can vanish over time and the Absinthe turns into a golden amber color with red reflections. The same applies to the louche, the purple color turns into an impressive white color with tiny hints of pink. This is a natural process and does not affect the quality of the Absinthe.

The SaarWhisky distillery

The "Saarland" is a region in the southwest of Germany. It is shaped by heavy mining and crowned with multifaceted natural landscapes. This region is as well home of the SaarWhisky distillery. Since 2015 SaarWhisky has specialized in so-called "Single Cask Bottlings". These are whiskey bottlings from only one single cask, which are offered in small batches. These have the same alcohol strength in the bottle as it was originally in the whiskey barrel (cask strength) and come without the addition of colorants or cooling filtration. For this, SaarWhisky imports barrels from Scotland and Ireland, which they personally select from hundreds. In the last years they have expanded their selection as well to exceptional Absinthe, Pastis and Gin which they distill in small batches with eccentric bottle designs.

Purple Haze is an exceptionally colored absinthe that deliberately sets itself apart from classic green or clear varieties and is positioned as a visually and aromatically unique special bottling.

The reddish-purple hue is a key stylistic feature of this absinthe and part of its concept. It clearly distinguishes Purple Haze from traditional absinthe and signals a modern, more experimental approach. The color is based on plant-based coloring botanicals, including hibiscus.

In contrast to classic styles, Purple Haze focuses not on historical authenticity, but on a distinctive, modern character – both visually and in its overall impression.

Purple Haze is aimed at connoisseurs who are open to unusual interpretations of absinthe. The flavor is designed to be perceived differently than classic herbal profiles, without losing the absinthe character.

Purple Haze is suitable for adventurous absinthe drinkers, for special occasions, or for anyone who consciously seeks a visual and stylistic contrast to classic absinthes.

Frequently Asked Questions General

Absinthe is a traditional herbal spirit whose characteristic taste is primarily derived from wormwood, anise, and fennel. It originated in the border region between Switzerland and France and became widely known in the 19th century.

Absinthe is traditionally diluted with ice-cold water, which is slowly dripped into the glass – often over a sugar cube. This preparation allows the aromas to unfold and creates the typical "louche" effect, where the spirit becomes milky and cloudy.

The high alcohol content serves as a carrier for the subtle herbal aromas and preserves them. Absinthe is therefore not intended for pure consumption, but is traditionally drunk diluted with water.

Absinthe is a traditional herbal spirit, whose characteristic taste is mainly due to wormwood, anise, and fennel. It originated in the border region between Switzerland and France and gained widespread recognition in the 19th century.

For the classic preparation, an Absinthe glass, an Absinthe spoon for the sugar cube, and a carafe or fountain with ice-cold water are used. These tools allow for slow dilution and ensure a balanced taste experience.
