Absinthe is traditionally prepared with ice-cold water and a sugar cube. To mix the water with Absinthe, one usually uses a water carafe or an Absinthe fountain. However, there is another interesting form of preparation: The use of a Brouilleur. The dripper has small holes through which the water slowly drips into the Absinthe in the glass.

Absinthe is traditionally prepared with ice-cold water and a sugar cube. To mix the water with Absinthe, one usually uses a water carafe or an Absinthe fountain. However, there is another interesting form of preparation: The use of a Brouilleur. A brouilleur or Absinthe dripper is a metal cup that is placed on the Absinthe glass. It is then filled with cold water (from a carafe). The dripper has small holes through which the water now drips into the Absinthe in the glass. It is a slow drip so that the Absinthe magically clouds in white streaks. This slow "louche" is particularly impressive. If you like, you can also add ice cubes or a sugar cube to the Brouilleur. We love the Brouilleur for its ease of use and its impressive effect in terms of the louche of the Absinthe! The Absinthe Brouilleur offered fits all standard glasses.

Absinthe Dripper: The history of the Brouilleur

The ALANDIA Absinthe Dripper is a reproduction of the legendary Terminus Dripper from the 19th century. The name refers to the manufacturer, Terminus Absinthe from Pontarlier. In our photo gallery, a historical Terminus promotional poster is shown. On it you can see two famous people: Constant Coquelin and Sarah Bernhardt, world-famous theatrical players of the 19th century and advertising testimonials of the Terminus brand. Terminus marketed their Absinthe as "good for your health" (Absinthe Bienfaisante), referring to the stomach-friendly qualities of the spirit.

How to use an Absinthe Dripper

In our video you can see, how you serve Absinthe with a Brouilleur or Absinthe dripper. The method is always the same, no matter how the Brouilleur exactly looks like. First, the Absinthe glass has to be filled with Absinthe, then the Brouilleur is placed on top. Now, you fill it with ice-cold water, which slowly starts to drip into the lower level of the glass. As Absinthe and water blend, you can experience the magic louche effect: Absinthe changes its color from green to white. Brouilleurs with their constant drip help to create a perfect louche, as Absinthe and water mix slowly.

Frequently Asked Questions about the
Product

The brouilleur is used for the classic preparation of absinthe. It allows for a slow, even addition of water directly into the glass.

The brouilleur is placed on the rim of the glass and filled with water. Small openings allow the water to flow in a controlled manner into the absinthe, ensuring even dilution.

A brouilleur allows for particularly precise dosing of the water. This creates a uniform louche effect, and the absinthe can be individually adjusted to taste.

The brouilleur can be easily cleaned with warm water. For a long lifespan, gentle hand washing is recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions
general

For the traditional ritual, three basics are usually sufficient: an Absinthe glass, an Absinthe spoon, and ice-cold water (e.g., from a carafe). Sugar cubes are optional. Those who prepare Absinthe more frequently or serve multiple people often use a fountain or a brouilleur for particularly even dripping.

An Absinthe glass is shaped to better highlight the aroma and mixing ratio. Many classic models (e.g., Pontarlier glasses) support the typical dilution with water and ensure that the louche effect develops beautifully and controllably – something that often appears less "harmonious" in a simple tumbler.

The Absinthe spoon is placed over the glass to hold a sugar cube while water slowly drips over it. "The right one" primarily depends on the glass size and style: It is important that it rests steadily and offers enough surface area for the water to flow through evenly.

Carafe: simple, flexible, ideal for beginners Brouilleur: controlled drip directly onto the glass, very classic Fountain: perfect for quiet, even dripping and when several glasses are to be prepared one after another (or simultaneously) – often the "ritual upgrade."

For glasses: clean gently, especially with delicate shapes or decorations – ideally with mild dish soap and a soft cloth. Spoons (depending on material/finish) should be stored dry to maintain their surface and shine. For delicate or coated items, hand washing is usually the safest option.
